[ARCHIVED] Snow Shoveling Tips

Now that we are in the full swing of winter, the Roselle Fire Department reminds you to follow some simple things to stay safe this winter season.

Some people estimate that shoveling snow requires the same exertion as running nine miles an hour! Here are some things you need to know to make the chore easier and safer.

  •  If you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or lung disease, DO NOT shovel snow without having first consulted with your doctor.
  •  Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking before shoveling.
  • Dress in layers. Always keep your head and hands covered (50 percent of the body’s heat loss is through the head).
  •  If shoveling on a sunny day, wear sunglasses.
  • Use a shovel that fits in length/weight appropriate to your height/strength. Try to shovel the snow while it’s new and light rather than partially melted, when it can be tightly packed and heavy.
  • If big snow falls are expected, don’t wait until the snow has stopped. It is easier and quicker to do several short passes rather than waiting and doing it all at once.
  • Don’t pick up too much at once, only fill one-half the shovel. If possible, use a small shovel. If you can, push the snow rather than lift it.
  • Dump the snow close to where you are shoveling. Remember the old adage, lift with your knees, not your back. Slightly bend your knees as you lift the shovel.
  • Even running a snow blower requires exertion and can be exhausting.
  • Pace yourself - it’s not a race. Take frequent breaks, the snow will still be there!

If you feel any tightness in your chest or tingling in your arms – STOP IMMEDIATELY and call 9-1-1 to be evaluated.
