[ARCHIVED] Recreational Fires Regulated in Roselle

Fire Pit

Recreational fires are allowed in Roselle and areas served by the Roselle Fire Protection District, but the fires must be kept small, no larger than three feet in diameter and no higher than two feet. While recreational fires are allowed, they cannot be made with materials that should be recycled or thrown out, such as leaves, yard waste of any kind, garbage, or construction debris. Only seasoned fire wood should be used to fuel a recreational fire.

Those lighting the fire should pay attention to the wind so that the fire does not become a nuisance to neighbors. Nuisance fires are defined as those that are deemed offensive or objectionable because of smoke or odor emissions, or when conditions make such fire hazardous. If the smoke causes a problem with neighbors, residents could be required to extinguish the fire. Bonfires are not allowed, unless a permit is issued by the Village.

Those enjoying an outdoor fire pit should have a charged garden hose, fire extinguisher, or bucket of water nearby. No one knows when an emergency will happen, especially with the drought conditions we are currently experiencing. Having a cell phone close by is also a good idea should the fire get out of hand, or if someone suffers a burn and emergency response is required.
